Ericka Pino, NJ Sharing Network and 11TH Annual Heritage Awards.

NJ Sharing Network’s Myra Burks-Davis (left) presents the Heritage Voice Award to Ericka Pino, weather anchor for television’s Telemundo 52. Ericka is an active proponent of organ and tissue donation and has lent her time and voice to create bilingual PSA’s to encourage organ donor registration.

Despite over a foot of snow that arrived on February 26th, over 200 people came out to honor the award winners at the 11th Annual Heritage Awards Gala “Community Healing: Saving Lives Through Organ and Tissue Donation.” This year’s theme highlights the life-saving importance of organ and tissue donation and the part our community heroes play in helping NJ Sharing Network in its life-saving mission.

NJ Sharing Network awarded the Honorable Jose Torres, Mayor of Paterson with the Heritage Community Advocacy Award. Mayor Torres has partnered with NJ Sharing Network on both legislative and community projects. Also honored was the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Epsilon Alpha Chapter with the Heritage Community Advocacy Award. For more than six years, this organization has partnered with NJ Sharing Network in sponsoring a “Walk–for-Life” walk-a-thon to raise funds to help with educational outreach programs in urban communities. Ericka Pino, the weather anchor for television’s Telemundo 52, was honored with the Heritage Voice Award for donating both her voice and time to create bilingual PSA’S that encourage organ donor registration.

In a touching presentation, this year’s “Ray of Hope” Award was given to the very special family of Dennis John. Dennis became an organ donor and hero to all of us when he lost his life while trying to save a fellow congregant in a tragic church shooting. This honor is bestowed upon those individuals that by virtue of their personal experiences with donation and transplantation have helped to shine a significant light on how organ donation saves lives and what the needs are across the country as it relates to the shortage of organ and tissue donors.

A special acknowledgement was presented to the South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters, Inc. (SAMAR), a nonprofit organization established in 1992 to educate and promote marrow and blood stem cell donation in the South Asian and other minority communities. SAMAR has partnered with our organization in community outreach projects and has helped serve as a bridge for NJ Sharing Network to reach the Southeast Asian Community.

The Heritage Awards Gala allows us to say thank you. We extend a special thanks to our Gold Sponsor Genentech, a member of Roche Group and Silver Sponsors Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Novartis Pharmaceuticals. With their help we have steadily increased the number of minority transplants in New Jersey. NJ Sharing Network and the Sharing Network Foundation would also like to extend special thanks to the Essex County Links, Inc. for their hard work and contributions to this year’s Tricky Tray Auction.
