They're a tag team of top real estate agents helping Latinos buy homes in Silicon Valley, leading a national trend that is slowly narrowing the "homeownership gap" for the largest minority group in the country. Prestamos Hipotecarios
The Barajas brothers, Alfredo and Juan, are Mexican immigrants who arrived as teen-agers in the mid-1980s. They now earn enough to own luxury cars, in part because they have been able to persuade lenders to take a closer look at Latinos' credit histories when they apply for home loans.
Nationwide, that homeownership gap is stark: 48.2 percent of Latinos owned homes in 2002, compared with 67.9 percent of the overall population.
While income and language remain significant barriers, real estate experts say fewer Latinos buy homes because the American financing process is often unfamiliar. Also, traditional credit checks ignore some factors that show Latinos to be worthy borrowers. Daniel Vasquez
