Chicago, IL, Jul. 2 (UPI) -- The American candy industry is busily filling the overdue need for sweets for the burgeoning U.S. Hispanic market.

Most companies, however, will be playing catchup to Hershey, which is bringing out a line targeting Latinos, including a new white chocolate Kiss filled with caramel, the Chicago Tribune said Friday.

Hershey hopes the new candies will surpass its Jolly Rancher brand, which is one of the best-selling candies among Hispanic consumers.

Hershey is also rolling out white and milk chocolate Hershey Miniatures containing bits of cookies and a spicy and a fruit-flavored Jolly Rancher lollipop. Package information will be in Spanish and English.

Candy makers Atkinson and Pop Rocks also listened to market predictions and are cautiously introducing new candies targeting Hispanics this year.

"There is no bigger opportunity for confectionery manufacturers today" than the Hispanic population, said Jim Corcoran, National Confectioners Association vice president.
